Adventure Travel

Latimer started Call of the Wild in 1978 during an active time of the women's movement. She was determined to grow her company and felt that what they were doing – being out in the wilderness – was an appropriate statement for what was taking place politically in the United States at that time. "Being in some place strange and having to find your way, carrying that backpack, was a great metaphor," Latimer says.

Twenty-seven years later, Call of the Wild has taken thousands of women on adventurous travel together. Latimer says there is almost always someone you can connect with, someone who will help you explore a new side of yourself.

After contacting the company, women set up their travel plans based on their desired destination and time of year. In the initial contact, women assess their goals, physical ability and wilderness experience to help determine what type of adventure trip is right for them.

"We wouldn't consider taking anyone on our Mt. Whitney trip if she did not have backpacking experience," says Holly Woodward of Call of the Wild. "A lot of our clients start out with our weekend hikes in Tahoe where they stay in a lake-view lodge. Then they progress to a beginner-backpacking trip and then further up the ladder. Our international trips are similar; clients progress from Baja to Machu Picchu."

Travel costs at Call of the Wild vary and are determined by destination.
