Bag It!

Keep Organized By Carrying Only What You Need

Tina Elmowitz, a busy mom living in Hollywood, Fla., and a former over-packer, has found the key to paring down: simplification! As busy executive vice president of a public relations firm, she quickly found out how work-related goods and baby gear can get out of hand.

"All I really need to have on me at all times for work is a cell phone and palm pilot," she says. "For my 17-month-old, I try to limit the goods to a couple of diapers, a sippy cup, two snacks, one pacifier and an extra T-shirt. Once I came to terms with the fact that it is easier to pop into a drug store or hit a drive-thru, rather than carry half of all my baby's possessions, getting out of the house and on the road was a much easier task."

Denise Bauwenss, school principal and mother of three from Media, Pa., doesn't tote around extra baggage. "Forget the briefcase," she says. "Any good laptop bag can hold folders, notepads and other briefcase items."

Her other tip: "Get a very small or wallet-sized handbag that can stand alone or which you can stick inside either the diaper bag or laptop bag." To achieve a pulled-together, professional look she buys all her bags in black.

Evaluate Bag Choices
Once you realize you really don't have to carry the entire contents of your office and nursery, it's time to evaluate what's really necessary to carry.
