A Lifetime of Cervical Health

A "precancerous" condition of the cells on the cervix and can be detected with the Pap smear and if necessary a biopsy.

  • Cervical cancer: Carcinoma of the cervix, which can be detected with a Pap smear but must be followed up with a biopsy as well as definitive treatment.
  • Cervical polyps: Small, tongue-like projections that grow out from the cervical os. These are usually benign but can cause abnormal bleeding which can be distressing to women. They are usually easily removed.
  • Cervical cysts: Occur on the cervix and are usually benign. They are often filled with mucus or sebaceous material.
  • Cervicitis: An inflammation of the cervix, possibly from a vaginal infection or an STD.
  • Taking Care

While you might consider your cervix to be "unreachable," cervical health isn't out of your hands.

Dr. Nardone offers these tips to take care of your cervix:

    • Obtain regular Pap smears and gynecological exams.
    • Quit smoking. Cigarette smoking is a culprit in cervical dysplasia and cancer.
    • Practice safe sex.
    • Avoid douching and use safe products such a Vagisil Foaming Wash instead to cleanse away wetness and odor.

I recently learned about an entire women's health initiative that promotes self-examination of the vagina and cervix just like self breast exams. While I can't say I have my speculum, flashlight and K-Y Jelly all ready to go, I can say that a greater awareness of the female reproductive system is always a good thing.
