Do Babies Need Alone Time?

Whatever the choice, it is important for parents to remember that infants are well-adapted to communicating through emotions and actions. Although it may seem like they need constant attention, a moderate amount is much healthier.

"Babies are like true-or-false tests – they let you know if they are happy with their current circumstances or not," Dr. Kennedy-Moore says. "If your baby is lying quietly, happily watching the shadows of leaves or the sparkle of dust motes in the sunshine, don't feel like you have to rush over to provide enriching stimulation. Give your baby the chance to experience quiet contentment."

Advice from a Seasoned Mom

"When you have your first child you think you have to constantly entertain them," says Shar Crull, a mother of five who is trying for her sixth from Clarkston, Mich. "When you have a second child you realize with that one that doing that is impossible because you don't have that much time to dedicate to just one of them. After having five children now I've learned that children need time to themselves and don't need constant stimulation, just as adults don't.

"With my first child I felt bad if I wasn't giving attention. Now I can go about my cleaning and doing other activities with my children in the room. I think it's good for them to see me busy doing other things. I know I wouldn't want someone trying to keep me busy all the time, and I've learned to apply that to my little ones."
