Mommy Time
Making Postpartum Fitness
a Priority
a Priority
By Michele Batz
- Surround yourself with positive friends and family. Get a strong support group around you who are enthusiastic about your goals.
- Practice positive self talk. When negativity or doubts creep in, use your inner voice to "change the record."
- Write about what you want to accomplish. Write your goals down and post them everywhere so you can see them on a daily basis.
- You are the person you are dreaming of. Do you want more energy? Do you want to enjoy life? Yes, of course you do. Remind yourself of this simple truth every day: You are the person you are dreaming of.
- Make the decision today to become healthy and fit. Write it down: "I have decided to get fit."
- It's important for you to understand that making these changes is good, but this is a journey. Your journey will take time, and you can expect it to take up to two years. Tell yourself right now that if you continue to resist this life change, another week and then another month will go by and you'll still have the body you have and you'll still feel the way you feel.
- Talking about fitness goals is one of the best ways to break down any inner resistance you may be feeling. If they are supportive, telling your friends and family what you're planning on doing makes you accountable.
- The changes you will be making are permanent behavioral changes that you will have for life. Start thinking of exercise as being your new way of living life, not just a temporary short-term solution to weight gain.
- Practice thinking of fitness and an active life as being fun. Retrain your thoughts to look forward to your exercise time rather than dread it.
- Take this time to learn as much as you can about exercise and its benefits to the human body. You'll find it harder to resist making changes when you are fully informed.

Re: Assumes problem is motivation rather than logistics by anonymous on 06/03/2009 01:37AM
This assumes the problem is motivation rather than logistics. With 3 children two and under (I had twins who are colicky), who would hold the baby/babies while I exercised? They don't nap.
