Getting Fit with Jazzercise

First, the obvious. As it is an exercise program, the health benefits may be most important. According to the Jazzercise Web site (www.jazzercise.com), participating in one of the many Jazzercise classes two to three times per week (three to four times if you are wishing to increase your fitness level) helps to develop cardiovascular fitness, improve metabolism, increase energy, strengthen and tone muscles, increase flexibility and improve health and well-being. "At Jazzercise, we combine a great cardiovascular workout with resistance training and stretching that will increase your muscle tone, flexibility, balance, strength and endurance, using easy-to-follow movements," says Missett.

"I was in bad shape," says Melinda Tentsi, a bank teller in Asheville, N.C. "I was overweight, and I looked awful. A friend had gotten two free passes to a Jazzercise class her mother was taking and invited me to go with her. I went – out of guilt mostly – but loved the class so much, I paid for the next 20! I've lost over 30 pounds, and I feel, and look, great."

Social Jazz

According to the Club Insider News, a health, racquet and sports club newsletter, the chances of maintaining a successful exercise routine increase by 62 percent if you exercise with friends. Jazzercise offers a social setting in which meeting and developing friendships is an added bonus.

"I didn't have a lot of friends when we moved from Wichita to Atlanta," says Brewer. "I had belonged to a gym back home, but didn't want to have to do all that again. So when the local YMCA offered Jazzercise classes, I figured, why not? It wasn't amonth before I had lunch dates, shopping trips and, of course, exercise classes with my new friends."
