Inexpensive Ideas for Home and Travel

  • Make a game out of identifying bills and coinage by having the child pick money out of a hat, and give a reward (even big hugs) for telling what it is. You could even add the change they identified into a fun money jar.
  • Save up coins and set up a store at home on a rainy day. Put household items in the store with a price tag of only a few cents. For example, sell a teddy bear for 36 cents. One person could be the store clerk, and the others could be customers. Let your child count out the money to buy items or make change.
  • When you go to a zoo or a similar place, let your child buy his or her own treats, and give a little reward for saving receipts. Maybe the reward could be buying a bag of food to throw to the seals.

  • If you do want to head out to an amusement park, check out ticket counters at local grocery stores to find out if they offer any sort of discount.
