Swaying to the Music
Dancing for Fitness and Fun

Dancing is made up of a few simple directional movements combined in different ways. For example, the smooth and elegant Waltz basic is made up of a box formed with the feet moving in four directions – forward, side together, back and side, together. This same box step is used in the Latin Rumba and the Brazilian Samba. The difference is in the timing of the music and the way you interpret the music (the style of the dance). Waltz is danced to music that is in three/four time or three counts to each measure. The slow, smooth Waltz is danced like a skater gliding across the ice – beautiful and classic. The Rumba is danced to four/four time with slow romantic but rhythmic Caribbean-based music. The Samba is danced to two/four timing with an energetic bouncing motion. The Samba is the dance of Brazil and the festive Carnival with quick, light movements.
As you learn the basic steps of each dance, you will become familiar with the appropriate music and feeling each dance creates. You will find your favorites – whether it might be contemporary, big band, rock or disco. When learning to dance, you may find a group lesson will give you a foundation for your learning. Everyone is learning together what the feet do (the pattern) and what each partner does (the lead and follow). Or you may choose to take private lessons with an instructor who teaches one on one – either you alone or you and your spouse.
