Why I Support the War in Iraq
One American's Opinion
By Lyn Mettler
Amassing weapons of mass destruction would give Saddam the power to either blackmail those he dislikes (certainly the United States) by threatening to use the
weapons or to actually use the weapons against us. The first would result in the death of our freedom and way of life; the second, in the death of untold numbers and unimaginable horrors.
For me, at its most basic, this is a fight for our freedom, not to mention that of the Iraqi people. As Americans, we enjoy freedom like no other country on the planet – the freedom to achieve our dreams, pursue happiness and live how we choose. That freedom, from its earliest days of the American Revolution, has always required sacrifice. Time and time again, we have had to fight to preserve it. And again, we are being challenged. I would rather rid the world of this man now before it is too late, before he can do damage beyond the walls of his country, before he can seriously threaten our freedom.
And it has never been our decision to go to war. It is Saddam's. He has always had the choice to relinquish control of Iraq and head into exile, avoiding further military action. But he refuses. And remember also that we are not alone. The world is behind us. The United Nations has demanded that he disarm; they simply refuse to enforce their own resolution.
