Why I Support the War in Iraq
One American's Opinion
By Lyn Mettler
As people around the world continue to protest the war in Iraq, I'd like to express my opinion as one American citizen who supports our president and our country's initiative to take military action. When I listen to the protestors and their reasons for not going to war, it seems to me they are not seeing the big picture. No one wants to go to war. No one wants anyone to die. But in this case, inaction would cause much greater devastation than action.
We know Saddam Hussein has chemical and biological weapons, and we know that he has used them in the past. We also know that he is seeking weapons of mass destruction. In fact, the world has agreed through numerous United Nations resolutions that Saddam possesses weapons that he should not have.
And we know about the many atrocities that he has committed against his people: gassing them, torturing them, starving them while he builds grander and grander palaces and adds to his weapons cache. We know he enjoys perverse evils like forcing parents to watch their children be tortured, raping and killing women and children and worse. We have seen his disgusting display on TV of captured American soldiers, obviously tortured and some brutally killed. Do we want someone like Saddam to own weapons of mass destruction? I, for one, do not.
