Swings With Zing
Choosing the Right Swing for Baby
By Neilia Sherman
When evaluating swings, look for a stable frame that won't tip. Check the seat to make sure that it is adequately padded and that there is a crotch post to prevent the baby from slipping out, as well as a secure seat belt. Removable seat covers are also a must, considering how common it is for babies to have a leaking diaper or to spit up during the early months.
Consider how you will remove Baby from the swing. Evans switched from a closed top to an open top swing model with her second child and says she prefers this type. "No more bumping my head or my baby's head," she says.
Be aware that some baby swings have been recalled. Check manufacturer Web sites or the iParenting.com Recall Section for recalled models.
Use even greater caution if buying a used swing. Boyle suggests parents should always remember to mail in the information card that comes with a new swing, which will assist in finding out if there is a recall.
