What if position is the problem? Maurene Hinds of Bozeman, Mont., had a colicky first baby. "The only time/place she slept was in the car seat," Hinds says. With their pediatrician's blessing, Hinds ended up putting the car seat in the crib. "She slept in it until [she was] 9 months old," she says. "I'm guessing [she] felt comforted by the enclosed space [and] being a little upright probably helped any tummy troubles." As a safety precaution, even in the crib, Hinds strapped her daughter in, leaving the straps a bit looser than when they drove so she couldn't get twisted around or fall out.

Safety Issues
"The baby's safety always comes first!" Lipman says. "If you place her on the dryer, make sure you keep your hand on her. If you put the baby in her highchair to teeth on the athletic sock, don't leave the room. Never leave your baby alone unless she is sleeping."

And with many things, go with your gut. "Parents should always listen to their intuition and their hearts," Lipman says. "If they find something that makes their baby feel better and it is safe, they should go with their instincts."
