Preserving Memories with a Family Time Capsule

By Mark Stackpole

Chris Casey of Montclair, Va., is a political consultant and the father of three. He is also a time capsule enthusiast who has entrusted a couple of them to future generations. "In creating our most recent time capsule, I selected a screw-top thermos, figuring it would be strong enough to suit the purpose," he says. "I put some of the contents in their own Ziploc baggies and used some duct tape to seal it."

When considering what to include in his time capsule, Casey coupled his own interests with those of his children. During the last few years he has collected a lot of information about his family's history. He burned most of that information onto a DVD for inclusion as well as some well-protected paper copies in case of technology failure.

"My children were very involved in the project, taking part in everything from choosing the container, writing letters and searching for pennies to find ones from the years of our births," he says. "It was a fun project all around." And where did the Casey family bury their time capsule? Under the concrete slab that provides the foundation for a new addition to their house. While this one is clearly meant to be opened well into the future, a family can bury a time capsule underneath a backyard tree, flowerbed or bushes – basically wherever they can be assured that they will remember where it is waiting to be discovered again.
