Snowshoeing for All Ages

A Winter Sport for Family Fun

With your map in hand, head for the hills with realistic expectations for your family. Don't expect small children to relish being cold and walking for long distances. Take it slow and make the most of snowshoeing by looking for particular winter birds (bring binoculars!), searching for animal tracks or taking pictures to put in your scrapbook at home. Then celebrate your new adventure with a steaming thermos of hot chocolate.

Places to Go

For places to take your family snowshoeing, contact county parks in snowy regions near you or look for maps on the park's Web site. For instance, Dakota County, Minn., lists four regional parks and reserves perfect for snowshoeing, complete with maps, on their site. Or search for mountain or hiking clubs in your area. A site like Hiking and Backpacking lists clubs in each state.
