A Real Gem
What's Your Resting
Metabolic Rate?
Metabolic Rate?
By Laura Paul
Klein says she encourages her clients to use the "Balance Log" software to keep tabs on the number of calories and the percentages of carbohydrates, fats and protein consumed on a daily basis. Keeping track of food choices and exercise teaches people a budgeting system. "It's a matter of making smart choices in your calorie range," she says. "You can make more educated decisions. Do I want to eat these cookies or do I have steak for dinner?"
While some nutritionists advocate eating only when hungry, Klein has many clients who say they never feel hungry. "We are emotional eaters," she says. "We eat because we are stressed out or we are going to a social event or having a five course meal. Few people eat nowadays based on hunger signals."
To have the test, Barnes says individuals should see health care professionals, wellness advisors and fitness consultants who have been trained to use the BodyGem. BodyGem can be found at Bally Total Fitness Centers, Sports Club/LA and Reebok Fitness Centers.
Solar says a person should not eat or drink anything for three hours before the test. Also, do not exercise the morning of the test. Since nicotine is a stimulant and will increase the RMR, refrain from smoking as well as using caffeine and other stimulants. Individuals who lose 5 pounds or 5 percent of their body mass will want to have their metabolism tested again.
