Dear Mom,
I know that you are Santa. How did you afford that big dollhouse last year? You must have saved a long time for it. Thank you. And thank you for everything that I am about to open. You are the best mom in the world.

As I wiped away the tears forming in my eyes, I realized that the meaning of the season was stronger than ever at that moment. It wasn't the fat, jolly man in the red suit that brought joy to the season, but moments like this. So goodbye, Santa. You will remain in our hearts during the season, but my daughter and I can handle the magic part just fine on our own.

My 6-year-old daughter, Ali, started exclaiming, "Mommy loves me!" during her daily life. It would come out spontaneously when we were playing and cuddling. This went on for a couple of months and I would respond accordingly and creatively to her. She'd giggle and we'd hug and roll around on the floor or bed.
Then, one weekend, I noticed she hadn't said it for a few weeks. In fact, I realized she had stopped saying it cold turkey. I asked her, "Ali, remember how you always used to say, 'Mommy loves me'?"
"Oh. Yeah," she responded aloofly, yet cordially. "I remember."
