Holiday Activities to Delight the Whole Family
By Rae Pica, Children's Movement Specialist
It may be bitterly cold where you live, but your little one still needs fresh air and especially sunshine. However, if going out to play in below-zero temps is just too much for you, take advantage of those unavoidable shopping trips to soak up a little vitamin D. Park just a bit farther from the mall entrance than you normally would, grab hold of your little one's hand and run like crazy. Or, if you're feeling daring, make a game of finding how many different kinds of movements (giant steps, tiptoes, etc.) you can use to get there!
Of course, it's not too early to ask your toddler to also lend a helping hand at this time of year. Toddlers can place ornaments on the lower branches of the Christmas tree, bows on your wrapped gifts or help with the menorah. They can help string popcorn (be sure it's non-buttered and stale!) with a plastic sewing needle. They can even hand you ingredients as you bake and assist with the stirring and pouring. You'll likely have to forego the idea of "perfection." But since you'll be fostering a sense of responsibility and purpose – and embracing the holiday spirit – it'll be well worth it!
