Stay-at-home Mom's Day Out

Get out of the House for a Change of Scenery with Baby

Breastfeeding on the Go

Some new moms who are breastfeeding don't want to leave the house because they are more comfortable at home. They have complete privacy and predictability as they nurse.

Susan Penrod of Fort Wayne, Ind., a La Leche League leader, encourages women to practice breastfeeding before going out in public in case they are nervous about showing. "You can practice in front of a mirror and find out what clothes work," Penrod says. "Sometimes we talk about having someone with you in the early days because they can act as a shield or open up a newspaper. I think some people feel nervous about nursing in public in the early days. It takes time for them to gain that confidence."

In addition to making social connections, take advantage of the time before you have to chase a toddler. She suggests using a baby carrier or sling. "We often talk about the benefits and portability of the little babies," Penrod says. "You can take a little baby to the movie and they will sleep through the whole thing and even nurse in the dark."

Some women feel nervous about nursing in a restaurant, but a crying baby draws more attention than a nursing one.

Penrod advocates having a support network. "Anywhere you go with other moms would make it easier," she says. "If you are in a group, that lends support whether it's going to a coffee shop with friends, a zoo or sitting on a bench at the park."
