Although joining a formal moms group helps many women stay connected, it's possible to join up with other moms at the baby story time at the public library. Bookstores and other businesses often host story time for babies and parents. And check with your local mall to see if they offer free concerts for children.

The Importance of Staying Connected

Susan Wegner of Mission Viejo, Calif., says some parents, even if their baby does not have a medical condition, are afraid of germs. They tend to be reclusive because they want to protect their baby the first year.

"If you can just get out it makes a difference," says Wegner, who has 3-year-old twin girls. "We see a ton of moms who shut down because they don't leave. You have no one to talk to."

Wegner says the double stroller and the theme park passes helped her stay sane. She is a member of the Saddleback Mothers of Multiples and the Mothers of Preschoolers groups.

When her twins were babies, Wegner did not work outside the home, but the entire family flew around the countrybecause of her husband's job. "It was not until they were 2 we stopped traveling and started looking for group activities," Wegner says. "We were in hotels every day the first two years."
