A Special Outing With Grandma
New Parents Helping Grandparents Spend Quality Time with Baby
By Sue Poremba
There are generation gaps, no matter how young the grandparents might be, so be prepared for some backlash. Older grandparents might not be convinced about the importance (and laws) about car seats, for example. Or, for example, 23 years ago when my daughter was an infant, babies spent a lot of time sleeping on their tummy, a practice which is discouraged today. Be prepared to back up your reasons why you approach childrearing the way you do and don't be afraid to be firm.
However, don't be afraid to listen, either. Every so often grandparents do have good suggestions and experience.
Most often, grandparents will take the baby for an hour at the park or play at Grandma's house. Make sure the grandparents are equipped with age-appropriate books and toys.
Structured activities geared for grandparents and grandbabies are growing in popularity, like Gymboree Play and Music or classes to help young children get acclimated to swimming. These types of activities can create a common interest that the grandparents and grandchildren will share as the child grows.
