How Did I Know That?

Investigating Mother's Intuition

By Dr. Laurie Nadel

"When my son was 3 days old, I knew something was terribly wrong with him. I told the doctor who said I was just anxious. They sent me home with him but the next day I brought him back to the hospital, insisting that something was wrong. A new pediatric resident took one look at the baby and said, 'Thank God you brought him back. He would have died if you hadn't.'" – Patty C., 59

"I woke up in the middle of the night and rushed into my daughter's room just in time to catch her as she fell out of bed. I hugged her and tucked her back in." – Pam H., 47

"One night my daughter and her friends were getting ready to go out on someone's boat. I suddenly shivered and saw a flash image of cold, dark water. After I told the girls what I had seen and felt, they decided not to go. Maybe nothing bad would have happened, but I'd rather be safe than sorry." – Judy H., 43

Clearly, mother's intuition goes beyond what we would categorize as maternal instinct.

There is a significant difference between knowing that your son must be tired at 4 in the afternoon and knowing that he had a problem in traffic. Linda P., 48, was driving home through downtown Detroit when she suddenly got a feeling she should look for her 18-year-old son.

"On a hunch, I turned down Jefferson just as a policeman was pulling him over," says Linda P. The officer had clocked her son going 49 miles an hour in a 35 mile per hour zone and was getting ready to write up a ticket. When she identified herself as the boy's mother, the policeman said, "It's good to find a concerned parent" and tore up the ticket. "Thank God I followed that hunch," she says.
