Goodnight, All Night

Getting Baby to Sleep
Through the Night

By Lisa A. Goldstein

Pages:  1  2  3  4

When her son started sleeping through the night, Jennifer Carnes of Downers Grove, Ill., was scared. She went in often to check his breathing. But she was glad they had moved to the stage where she was sleeping through the night, too. "It is refreshing to wake up in the same place where you started the night!" Downers says.

Uninterrupted sleep has its benefits – for everybody. "The funny thing was because she was getting sleep, and we were getting sleep, we were all a much happier family," Conyers says. "And snuggling before sleep time was a treat again."

The Sleepy Planet Game Plan

Jill Spivack and Jennifer Waldburger, The Sleepy Planet co-founders, recommend a solid game plan for getting Baby to sleep through the night. They say the following should be incorporated:

  • A good sleep environment
  • A good schedule for bedtime, wake time, naps and feedings
  • A good predictable bedtime routine (wind down routine)
  • Decreasing external associations so the baby can learn the skill of self-soothing
  • Weaning night feedings if child is able
  • Stopping the misuse of sleep aids (pacifiers, swaddle, etc.)
