Calming Fussy Babies
5 Top Tips for Parents to Help Soothe Infants
By Shannon McKelden
To help her colicky daughter get to sleep, Gina Maggard of Neon, Ky., used a CD that had sounds like waves washing up on shore. As an added benefit it was supposed to have subliminal messages on it to boost confidence. "It did," Maggard says. "Through her whole life she has been one of the most confident people I know."
If noise isn't the problem, Lipman has other sleep solutions in her book. Anika Denise of Barrington, R.I., advises heating the bassinet or crib mattress with a hot water bottle, warming the crib sheet just slightly, before putting the baby in. "That way, the baby is going from your warm snuggle to a warm bed, and they tend to stay asleep when you put them down," Denise says.
