Getting Kids Fit in a Fun Way

With two parents in the business – the fitness business, that is – it's only natural that the Neville family's downtime isn't usually spent sitting down. Dad Paul Neville, one of the nation's top fitness trainers, has always had a passion for promoting fitness among everyone, but with a particular interest in groups such as children, the elderly and those with conditions that can make keeping fit difficult.

Neville's interest in children's fitness was magnified after the birth of his first child, Leah. In 2003, he founded Kid Fitness Inc. and joined forces with Pro Image Studios to produce the Kid FITNESS television series and exercise video. KID FITNESS, which launched in September 2005, appears on public television stations nationwide. The interactive show aims to get kids up and moving while they're watching some of their favorite shows, but, as Neville points out, it's families that can really keep kids fit and healthy on an ongoing basis.

Moving Into Fitness
Becoming a fitness expert wasn't what Neville had planned for himself. He had been an athlete all his life, playing ice hockey and football in high school and college, but after college he chose a traditional career path. At 22 he was working for an insurance company and, although he knew it was what he was "supposed" to do, he wasn't particularly excited about his job.

"I felt like I could really be good at something and love what I was doing as well but this just wasn't it," says Neville. "I realized that the place I felt very passionate was in the gym and that athletics was where I excelled."

Starting over in his new career, Neville did excel. He went on to earn several personal training certifications from the Fitness Institute of Technology (FIT), the International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA) and the American Council of Exercise (ACE). In 1999, he won the World's Best Trainer Award from Met Rx. He's also formed several fitness and personal training companies.
