Girlfriend Getaway
Recharge, Relax and Renew
By Tracy McGinnis
Most trips with Women's Travel Club are pre-planned with durations ranging from four days to three weeks and destinations ranging from New York City to international travel like Chile and Easter Island. "Location and duration determine cost," Stoller says. "We have women attend from all over North America and also places including the Caribbean and England."
Chrisena Coleman was so inspired by the strong bond she shared with her girlfriends that she wrote a book about it, Just Between Girlfriends: African-American Women Celebrate Friendship (Simon & Schuster, 1998). "I wanted to dispel the myths out there, that women are catty and do not have it within themselves to be good friends," she says.
Just Between Girlfriends travel club was formed under the same premise and plans memorable and fun-filled events for women. Events include getaway weekends, girlfriend night outs, pampering parties, book signings and more. For example, a trip to Puerto Rico included a welcome reception, literary caf窠power walk to honor breast cancer, power breakfast, shopping tour, pool party, inspirational service and a pajama party.
"Getting away from the job, the husband and the children actually makes you a better employee, wife and mom," Coleman says. "Sure, you miss your family when you're away, but these types of women-only retreats give us a chance to connect and share with other women who are in the same position. There are many stresses that go along with juggling careers and families, and a JBG getaway is a special time for women to bond."
