Here are some other quitting tips the American Legacy Foundation suggests:
  • Set a quit date.
  • Write down a list of reasons to quit and keep it as a handy reminder.
  • Call 1-800-QUITNOW for free counseling anywhere in the country.
  • Choose smoke-free environments.
  • Keep trying! Quitting can take a few attempts, so if you don't succeed the first time, look at it as practice for the next round.

Staying Clear of Secondhand Smoke

Avoiding secondhand smoke is an important way to keep you and your family breathing clear. The following tips from the American Osteopathic Association were provided by Dr. Kitturah Klaiss, an osteopathic family physician from West Blockton, Ala.

  • Avoid public places where people are smoking.
  • Try to select "nonsmoking" options that are available in restaurants, hotels and other establishments. Most states have smoke-free Web sites with nonsmoking establishment listings.
  • If a restaurant puts you near smokers, ask to be moved.
  • If smokers do not obey nonsmoking rules, politely ask that they not smoke around you.
  • Do not allow smokers to smoke around your children.
  • Ask visitors not to smoke in your home.
  • If you live with smokers, encourage them to quit.
