Making Kids the No. 1 Priority

After having her first child, Jessica, and then adopting her second child, Emily, from Romania, Elli Holman, a public relations representative in Boston knew it was going to be difficult raising two kids on her own. "When I announced I was pregnant with Jessica, now a 5-year-old, my boss and the owner of the company said to me, 'This child is the most important thing in your life. Nothing that happens here will ever be as important as what you do with this child,'" she says. "It is that attitude that has made working full time and managing two children, a house, community affiliations, etc., doable. I have worked very hard to make everything work for me, but the attitude of my employer and the support network that every single mother has to have, have been the keys."

She says about her career and her children, "I'm very organized so I can maximize the time I spend with my kids. In some ways it makes me a better mother because I treasure the small amount of time we spend together. The best part about being a working mother is when you go to pick them up and they run into your arms and say, 'I've been waiting for you.'"
