Young, Pregnant and Entering Single Motherhood
Two Women's Stories
By Jessica Williams
from college when she was 8 months pregnant.
Here is Amanda's story, in her own words:
"I was 19 years old when I met my son's father. Nineteen years old, in college and completely naive to how terribly some men are capable of treating the women they are supposedly in love with. In my dense innocence I believed that I could somehow alter this man – 'fix' him somehow – but things only continued to get worse. I was becoming a battered woman without even realizing the downward spiral I was in.
"Until that fateful day – the day the lines appeared, the two lines on the pregnancy test. Twenty one years old, I remember standing in my bathroom and raising my head, looking myself in the eye in the mirror and hating the weak, submissive female staring back at me. I just snapped, not in a ferocious tidal wave, but into a determined calmness that frightened those closest to me. I calmly went to my boyfriend's that night, told him the situation, turned a deaf ear on his threats to force me to lose the baby, packed my things remaining there and left. I didn't shed one tear; I felt nothing, nothing but that determined calmness.
"I graduated from college 8 months pregnant and with that same determined calmness, pushed Ethan Alexander into this world on a bright sunny morning. I never understood the human heart's capacity to love until I set eyes on my little boy. He was so calm and serene as he laid on my stomach staring up at me. I saw myself in his eyes. It was incredible. I can't imagine any bond like the one I have with this child of mine. My masterpiece that I carried and brought into this world on my own."
