Fun in the Sun

Crafts That Capture
the Essence of Summer

By Kymberly Pratt

Pages:  1  2  3

For crafty kids and adults alike, summer is a perfect time to get creative and work on fun projects the whole family can enjoy. So this summer take some of the gifts of summer sand, summer breezes, outdoor games, shells, water and turn them into creative crafts.

Adult supervision is required for all crafts.

Summer Beach Bag
These bags also make great birthday presents. Little ones love getting gifts that their friends have helped make!

You'll need:

  • Canvas tote bag
  • Fabric paints
  • Cookie cutters
  • Pencil
  • Aluminum foil

Here's what you do:
Put the aluminum foil inside the bag to prevent the paint from bleeding through to the other side. Use your pencil to trace the cookie cutters, or whatever shapes you choose, onto your bag. You could choose a particular theme, or you could even paint handprints on the bag.

After you have the shapes drawn, paint them (toddlers love helping with this part!). Make sure to use fabric paint so you can wash the bag if it gets dirty. When you're done with one side, allow it to dry overnight, and then, if desired, decorate the other side.

Summer Wind Chime
You can do this project with multiple pots, different themes or with larger pots!

You'll need:

  • 2-inch clay pots
  • Giant jingle bells
  • Twine
  • Beads
  • Paint
  • Paintbrushes

Here's what you do:
Clean off the pot with some damp paper towels to remove any dust. Make sure it is completely dry before beginning the project. Once it is dry, paint the pot. Be creative! And don't limit yourself to just paint. Use stickers, sponges, markers anything! Allow the pot to dry.
