But Captain Mummert says to be careful of the toys that are the year's fad toy. "You wouldn't believe how many calls we got from those little scooters that were so popular [a few years ago]," he says. "Parents need to pay attention to the age requirements and safety precautions on products. Little kids have big heads compared to the rest of their bodies. Those scooters get going pretty fast, and the first thing to hit the ground is the child's head. Pay attention to the age requirement and the safety recommendations, whether it be helmets or elbow pads or whatever."
On Christmas Day, Mummert and the other paramedics were called to a house where a toddler had gotten a gift with little pieces. The toddler immediately put one of the pieces up his nose, to the degree that the paramedics couldn't help, and the boy was taken to the hospital. "If a child is not old enough, they will put it in their mouth or nose and could choke," he says.
