"Hopefully we'll start to see it as integrated into our parenting as rocking, singing and breastfeeding," says Steptoe.

"Being open to touch is a powerful way to raise children," says Toporek. "For people who want to raise extraordinary children, massage is the thing to do."

3Ways to Calm Baby's Tummy

"The Water Wheel" Cupping your hand, make a scooping motion toward yourself using the side of your hand. Start right below the rib cage and move to just below the diaper line. Lift your hand and start over. Repeat seven or eight times.

"The Sun and Moon" Moving clockwise and using the pads of your fingers, make a full circle (or "sun") on your baby's stomach beginning below the rib cage to 1 to 2 inches below the belly button using your left hand. With your right hand, make the shape of a crescent moon, again moving clockwise, beginning at 10 o'clock and moving to 4 o'clock. Move both hands at the same time, repeating each eight times.

"I Love You" Be sure and say each word out loud to your baby as you massage her using the pads of your fingers. To make the "I," make a straight line on your baby's stomach from the rib cage down the left leg. For "Love" make a backwards, upside down "L" (if your baby could read, it would be right-side-up to her) on her tummy, moving from left to right. For the "You," make an upside down "U" on your baby's belly, again moving from left to right. Repeat four or five times.
