Holistic Help
Treating Depression Naturally By Amy Carey
Whether you're suffering from postpartum depression or have battled depression for a lifetime, it's essential to find ways to relieve the condition. Are there treatments for depression that don't require a prescription? Some mothers think so, and they are looking for holistic, natural approaches to treat their symptoms.
"Depression is not usually caused by just one factor," Behling says. "The mind, the body and the spirit all work together." When there is an imbalance among these three, you may feel depressed or become physically ill. "By treating the individual as a whole, the body has the ability to help heal itself and promote health internally and externally," she says.
When considering a holistic plan to battle depression, diet plays an important role. "Some forms of [mental disorders] may be caused by nutrient deficiencies or excesses, food allergies or other nutritional medical concerns like hypoglycemia," says Behling.
By changing your diet to include an appropriate balance of nutrients, you might notice a change in your mood right away. Physical symptoms of depression like fatigue and lethargy also are affected when you provide your body with a more balanced diet.
