And in the past 20 years, corporations and the government have stepped up efforts to help. Faith Wohl helped monitor work-family issues for the DuPont Company in the 1980s. The company implemented childcare resources, increased family leave and flexible work practices.
DuPont was part of a trend of companies making these changes throughout the late 1980s, says Wohl, who is now the president of Child Care Action Campaign, an organization that promotes awareness of childcare issues.
Though programs have not continually improved, the evolution of work-family life has been a cycle parallel to the boom bust cycle of the economy, she says. "The early 1990s brought the first wave of downsizing, and many family benefits were cut," Wohl sa
